New Month -- April Update

I know it's April 1st and therefore many people play pranks but I assure you this is no prank.

Nathan is having a hard time typing now so I, his father, am writing a post for him today.

A cancer patient named Mike, started treatment in Seattle at the same time as Nathan. There was only 4 days difference between Nathan's and Mike's births. But Mike had two serious diseases, ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and AML. Even though Mike was in isolation much of the time and they didn't see each other often, Nathan felt connected to Mike.

Recently they were located in the ICU area in rooms next to each other.  Nathan knew that Mike was having a very difficult time.  Yesterday Nathan was informed that Mike's family decided to pull Mike off all medical devices this morning at 8 am.

Mike's family was with him all day yesterday and Nathan was not able to see him. This morning when we came into the room, Nathan stated he was sorry that he didn't have anything nice to wear. We asked Nathan for the reason he needed something nice to wear and Nathan stated he needed the clothes to see Mike. But Mike died last night before the medical staff could disconnect the medical equipment. When Nathan was told that Mike already passed away, he was very distraught. Nathan then stated he wanted to attend the funeral. Mike's sister came by and thanked Nathan for his concern and friendship with Mike. She also mentioned to Nathan that they would not have a traditional funeral.

It's been a sad day in the ICU and Bone Marrow Unit.

God Bless
David Berry

  1. Dear Nathan, I am so sorry to hear about your friend Mike. This is not the news any parent, relative, friend or soul mate should bear.
    My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today, as always. May God be with you at this time and know YOU ARE LOVED by people you know as well as those who you have never met. Peace, Lisa

  4. Thank you for the update. I prayed for you and your family here. I read an encouraging passage today that I would like to share:

    Psalm 136:1
    Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    2
    Give thanks to the God of gods,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    3
    Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    4
    To Him who alone does great wonders,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    5
    To Him who made the heavens with skill,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    6
    To Him who spread out the earth above the waters,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    7
    To Him who made the great lights,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
    8
    The sun to rule by day,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    9
    The moon and stars to rule by night,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

    10
    To Him who smote the Egyptians in their firstborn,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    11
    And brought Israel out from their midst,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    12
    With a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    13
    To Him who divided the Red Sea asunder,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    14
    And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    15
    But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    16
    To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    17
    To Him who smote great kings,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    18
    And slew mighty kings,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
    19
    Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    20
    And Og, king of Bashan,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    21
    And gave their land as a heritage,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    22
    Even a heritage to Israel His servant,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

    23
    Who remembered us in our low estate,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
    24
    And has rescued us from our adversaries,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
    25
    Who gives food to all flesh,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    26
    Give thanks to the God of heaven,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
